Fact of the Day: 26/01/2023

There are many well-known sea creatures, but have you ever heard of a blue glaucus? The blue glaucus is a very small species of sea slug. Its distinctive blue coloration serves as camouflage, helping it blend in with the surrounding ocean and also the sky above. It has six tentacle-like structures protruding out of its sides; these are used for protection. According to American Oceans.org, “It has a reputation for being both angelic and deadly and is best known for eating venomous prey and stealing their toxins” (par. 2). Its diet actually consists of mostly venomous sea creatures, and while it is not naturally venomous itself, it can take on the venomous characteristics of its prey. This slug is the definition of ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’! The blue glaucus can be found in the Indian Ocean, as well as in the Atlantic and Pacific. It is a great mixture of beauty and strength and it shows what mother nature is capable of.
