The Pros and Cons of Modern Technology

Written by Asiyah | Edited by Hitej | January 7th, 2024 | Technology

Today, people think modern technology is the best solution to all our problems. But this is only partly true. Modern technology is handy, but can sometimes be extremely dangerous or bothersome. This is why we will discuss this matter more deeply, considering the pros and cons of some modern technology, like cars, computers, and robots.

Modern Cars

Modern cars are very useful in our everyday lives. For example, they have sensors that warn us by beeping if we are too close to an object or if we are about to crash. They also have cameras that help us if we are parking or backing out of a car park. There are a lot of other features in modern cars, too. While useful, they are sometimes a little irritating, because sometimes it’s only a plant that is close, but the car doesn’t know that and beeps loudly, or suddenly stops. Cars are also one of the leading causes of global warming. They emit a lot of carbon dioxide into the environment, which is a big problem. However, a lot of new electric vehicles (EVs) are reducing carbon emissions, representing a big leap forward.1 While they may be bothersome at times, it is important to note that modern technologies are constantly optimized toward both safety and the protection of the environment.

Modern Devices

Modern devices, like phones or computers, are a great way to communicate with the outside world. For instance, sometimes people need to get picked up, and all they need to do is call one of their family members or a friend. They can also plan business matters easily. However, on the flip side, open access to the Internet, particularly for kids, may invite all sorts of criminal and dangerous activity. Kids could be communicating with people pretending to be other kids. In addition, children can be exposed to knowledge that they would have been better off without.2

Modern Robots

Scientists have created robots to do many tasks that are done in places not safe for humans. These include welding, lifting heavy objects, working with chemicals, and foundry work.3 Robots were also made so that people wouldn’t have to do tasks that were repeated over and over, such as those involved in manufacturing products. However, robots are very expensive, need special care in cold weather, and need frequent maintenance, which are all important cons to consider.4 Still, they have big upside, as while they decrease the availability of many dangerous jobs, they also increase the amount of safer jobs in the robot industry.

Conclusion

Modern technology is a great thing. It has many uses and advantages, but it also has a lot of disadvantages. Now, whether or not you agree with modern technology, that’s another story, but for now, we’ll stay with the pros and cons. It’s very convenient to use modern technology, but always stay alert and careful, because it can be full of dangerous surprises.
