Fact of the Day: 23/11/2022

Hand sanitizers have always been convenient and important, but since the outbreak of Covid-19, they have become especially helpful. We all know hand sanitizer can clean our hands, but how does it do it? Hand sanitizers are mostly made of alcohols, which work well to  kill bacteria. According to LiveScience.com, “Alcohols destroy disease-causing agents, or pathogens, by breaking apart proteins, splitting cells into pieces or messing with a cell’s metabolism” (par. 4). There only needs to be about 30% alcohol in the substance for it to be effective, but the more alcohol there is, the better and safer the results (par. 4). Still, there are some things hand sanitizer can’t clean, like chemicals or grease. Despite its limits, hand sanitizer is a wonderful thing that can help keep us healthy and clean.
