Today’s Fact (17/05/2024)

How do you write one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine hundredths? The answer actually depends on where you live! Generally, either a point or a comma is used as a decimal separator, with the other punctuation mark being used for separating groups of three digits for higher place values, but the mark used for each function differs by country. For example, in many European countries, a comma is used as the decimal separator and a point as the higher place value separator, so one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine hundredths would be written as 1.200,99. However, in the UK, U.S., and several other countries (especially those that use the Imperial system), a point is used as the decimal separator and a comma as the higher place value separator, so the same number would be written as 1,200.99.

Which system do you use in your country?
