Fact of the Day: 24/11/2022

Paint is something commonly used around the world. It can be applied to walls, canvases, wood, clay, and much more! Despite its widespread use, I don’t think many people truly know how this versatile substance has changed over the years. Paint has been used since ca. 38,000 B.C., but it used to be made out of common materials found in nature like mud or even animal fat. Then, in the 1600s-1800s, paint began to be manufactured from oil or water bases, depending on use and color. During the 1800s specifically, non-toxic paints started being produced. In the 1900s, paint became more popular and easier to produce. Linseed oil was commonly used, but because it became scarce during World War II, many people started using alcohols for paint instead. Now, most paint is water based. Paint has been important since the beginning of time. It may not seem like it, but it helped people long ago tell stories through pictures on cave walls, and even now, people can describe their experiences all through a little thing called paint.
