Fact of the Day: 29/11/2022

Solar cells transform the sun’s light energy into useful electrical energy. Scientists have recently discovered a new material that could be used to improve the solar cell. According to PHYS.org, “methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite . . . could potentially replace silicon in solar cells” (par. 4). Perovskites are incredibly efficient semiconductors. However, this material can easily break down if it interacts with moisture or heat, potentially causing problems if the material is placed outdoors (par. 4). Scientists are still researching this and who knows, maybe MAPbI3 will be the future of solar energy.
