Fact of the Day: 05/12/2022
Photosynthesis is something incredibly valuable to humans and animals alike. The word may sound confusing, but the actual process is not. According to National Geographic, “Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar” (par. 1). Plant cells contain organelles called chloroplasts; their job is to store energy they collect from the sun (par. 4). From there, the energy can be used to power the process of photosynthesis. There are actually different types of photosynthesis: C3 photosynthesis is the process used by most plants and involves a three-carbon compound that will later become glucose (par. 5); C4 photosynthesis involves a four-carbon compound that will later split into a three-carbon compound and carbon dioxide molecule (par. 5). Both types of photosynthesis are important, but C4 photosynthesis produces more carbon, allowing plants to live in an environment without much water or even sunlight. Photosynthesis is a complex and important process. Did you know there were different versions of it?
