Fact of the Day: 07/12/2022

Most people know about engineers like Nikola Tesla, but do you know who Emily Roebling was? An engineer born in 1843 in New York, U.S., Roebling is best known for her help in building the Brooklyn Bridge (par. 1). Her husband, Washington Roebling, took on the job of building the bridge, but then became very sick. Emily Roebling took care of her husband, and then later decided to work with the construction crew to help complete the bridge. According to Britannica.com, “Emily served as Washington’s liaison with the engineering team, and over time she displayed such proficiency in the issues of construction, materials, and cable fabrication that some observers concluded she had assumed the duties of chief engineer” (par. 3). The Brooklyn Bridge was built and is still standing today, all thanks to a little-known woman named Emily Roebling.
