Fact of the Day: 10/01/2023
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder most common in children. It can cause people to have trouble focusing on tasks (CDC, par. 1). Caffeine is found in coffee, tea, and other foods, and it can have both positive effects (e.g., helping keep people focused) and negative effects (e.g., causing people to become anxious or jittery), according to Healthline (par. 1). How do ADHD and caffeine work together? Caffeine can help focus one’s attention. According to Healthline.com, “It stimulates the body’s central nervous system, and boosts the brain’s production of a neurochemical known as dopamine, which controls the ability to focus and maintain concentration” (par. 3). While this is good, caffeine can also cause ADHD-like symptoms, such as forgetfulness or irritability. Caffeine can also tighten blood vessels and reduce blood flow, which in turn can cause migraines. For those with ADHD, though, it can help minimize activity in parts of the brain that may be experiencing overactivity (Healthline, par. 5-9). So, overall, caffeine has both positive and negative effects on people with ADHD, but it may be just the thing to help you or someone you know get just a little more done in a day.
