Fact of the Day: 02/02/2023
Do you like horror movies? If so, you have probably felt fear watching someone walk down a dark hallway. Have you ever wondered what purpose fear serves? The fear we feel now in conjunction with certain things is actually supposed to protect us from predators and other dangers. This might not make sense, but the reason we are afraid of things like height is because over time we have evolved to know that being up high is not safe for humans. Fear can also present itself in multiple ways—you can freeze in place, run away, or feel the urge to fight. When we feel fear, our body undergoes changes. According to UWA.edu, “Most of the physical symptoms we experience when it comes to fear come from the changes in our cardiovascular system. Heart rate increases, and blood vessels constrict. Your respiratory rate increases, and adrenaline picks up” (par. 14). Some internal organs can also be affected. What do you think would happen if humans stopped feeling fear? Would we be in danger more, or less often?
