Fact of the Day: 5/11/2020

Many are aware that the colder an object is, the less the molecules will move around and the more rigid they will become, thus taking up a smaller volume. Consequently, the warmer an object is, the faster its molecules move around and the less volume it will occupy. However, this fact is also true for rigid steel and metal structures such as bridges, buildings, and even the eiffel tower. Thus, due to the expansion and contraction of a material based on its temperature, many bridges and buildings are made with expansion joints so that it can safely expand and contract. This also means that on a particularly hot day in Paris, the eiffel tower can grow 15cm!
