When lightning strikes during a thunderstorm, it cracks oxygen molecules in the atmosphere into free radicals which then form into ozone, a triple-oxygen molecule that protects the earth from UV rays. The smell of ozone is a very distinct and fresh one – that’s the “fresh” scent you smell after a thunderstorm.
