Fact of the Day: 05/03/2021

How did scientists of the past measure extremely long distances? Through Geodetic Land Surveying techniques. The process sounds complicated, but it really is very simple. Although they had no tools to measure the distances between objects, they were able to measure the angles between them. Using calculus, they could use the angle measurements to create a triangle between objects and calculate side measurements. These side measurements would then allow them to solve for more known values. The process would then be repeated over and over again until each side measure was found and, subsequently, the needed distance. Maybe you can try triangulating objects in your home to find the distances between them!
