Fact of the Day: 10/03/2021

Did you know that human beings know more about outer space that our very own oceans? Humans have only been able to explore 5% of Earth’s oceans – an incredible 95% is still completely unknown to us. In addition, 99% of livable land exists beneath the ocean, which gives scientists all the more reason to want to find a way to explore it. But why is marine exploration so difficult?

One way many scientists choose to explore the oceans is with satellites; however, satellites only have the ability to see the surface of the ocean. Another method of  exploration involves physical submersion, where scientists and professionals use technology to submerge themselves or robotic equipment into the depths of the ocean. Although this technique has been largely successful, the deepest and most mysterious parts of the ocean are still undiscovered because of the cold, darkness, and extreme water pressure that make submersion insanely difficult. In fact, it has been said that sending a person into space is far easier than sending one into the depths of the ocean.
