Could censorship actually increase the memorability of certain words? One study by Professor Matthew Kelley says it just might. Kelley conducted a study amongst college students in which he censored random nouns in an unknown song. The results of the study showed that the participants remembered the censored words far better than the uncensored words. Kelley concluded that censorship can increase the memorability of words and may actually be a very useful study strategy for high school and college students. He also mentioned that although this censorship has proven to have the opposite effect on college students, it may work for the intended audience (children) since they have little to no knowledge or memory about the words censored.
