Fact of the Day: 24/03/2021
Can listening to music make you smarter? According to a 1993 study performed by the University of Queensland in Australia, there is a correlation between listening to Mozart and an increased IQ score, as the study showed that college students had an 8-9 point increase in IQ after listening to Mozart for 10 minutes. However, a further study has shown that listening to music does not directly make an individual smarter, but rather creates a sense of enjoyment and alleviates stress and anxiety within the brain to allow for greater focus and, subsequently, higher scores. Although listening to music is not a direct cause of increased intelligence, studies have shown that learning to play an instrument is. In fact, learning an instrument is attributed with a 10% increase in intelligence.
