What is paleomagnetism? It’s a large word and certainly a mouthful, but in the scientific world, paleomagnetism is the study of rocks that were formed deep in the Earth’s core that aims to learn about the development of the Earth’s magnetic field. Paleomagnetists collect and study pieces of black rock that were formed deep under the Earth’s crust by hot magma and use those observations to come to scientific conclusions about our Earth’s magnetic field, such as its direction and strength.
