Fact of the Day: 28/04/2021
Have you ever wondered what enzymes do and why we need them? Enzymes are a special class of proteins. Their job, in a nutshell, is to make chemical reactions in cells go faster. They do this by lowering the activation energy for a reaction so that less energy is needed to get the reaction going. This makes the reaction go faster, because the same amount of energy that would be needed to complete the reaction once can be used to fuel the reaction several times over. Without enzymes to lower the activation energies of our cells’ reactions, the reactions would proceed too slow for life to sustain itself. Thank you, enzymes!
