Fact of the Day: 05/05/2021
What does your body’s circadian rhythm do for you? All living organisms have a circadian rhythm that regulates their sleep-wake cycle. Your circadian rhythm reacts to outside stimulus (such as light and darkness, work, food intake) and sends this information to a part of the brain called the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN) within the Hypothalamus, telling you when to wake up and when to wind down every 24 hours. If you have a regular sleep and wake schedule for work, school, or any other activities, you may have noticed that your body has the tendency to wake up or feel tired even during the days you don’t need to do them. For this, you may blame your circadian rhythm! However, no fear, you can train your circadian rhythm by enforcing or limiting certain stimuli. It may take a few weeks to completely change your rhythm, however, with effort, it can be done!
