Fact of the Day: 07/06/2021

What is Ladino? Ladino, or Judeo-Spanish, is a form of Spanish that became a Jewish language when Jews were cast out of Spain in the late 1400s. Why is it particularly interesting? Since many Jews no longer had contact with Spain, their Spanish didn’t evolve with Spain’s Spanish, and their version retained vocabulary and grammar from the Spanish spoken in the 1300s and 1400s! Ladino is still spoken today, mainly in Israel. Since the late 1400s, it has incorporated words from a variety of languages, including Turkish, Greek, and Arabic. Pretty cool, huh?
