Fact of the Day: 17/09/2021

Did you know that dragonflies see the world in ultra color? Really, they put human color vision to shame.

Humans (and many other animals) have trichromatic vision, which means we perceive colors as a combination of three colors—red, green, and blue. Each color matches one type of color-perceiving protein, known as an opsin, present in our eyes. Since we have three opsins in our eyes, we see the three main colors, and we piece together combinations of those colors to appreciate all the colors we know.

Dragonflies, however, have at least eleven and up to thirty unique opsins. Their color vision is so developed that they might even be able to see in ultraviolet! How spectacular is that?
