Have you ever seen an orchestra play, whether live or in a video? If not, you should search for a video because it’s really cool; if so, did you notice that the musical instruments seem to be divided into ‘groups,’ with certain types of instruments placed close together?
There are, in fact, different categories of musical instruments. The ‘strings’ refers to the instruments belonging to the violin family, plus the bases and double bases. The ‘woodwinds’ are wind musical instruments, typically referring to instruments like the flute, clarinet, oboe, etc. The term ‘brass’ refers to bigger, lower-pitched wind instruments like trumpets, trombones, tubas, and such. You may also find percussion instruments, like the timpani, cymbals, and xylophones. Some orchestras may include instruments like harps, pianos, and perhaps even choruses to sing along as well. See if you can spot any of these instruments (or any choruses) next time you watch an orchestra play!
