We all know that the sun is big and that it has a lot of mass. But just how much mass does it have?
The sun’s mass is 1.989 x 1030 kg, which is a huge number—“1989” followed by 27 zeroes! To put that in context for the whole solar system, everything that is not the sun—planets, asteroids, meteoroids, comets, gas, dust, etc.—constitutes only 0.2% of the mass of the solar system. That leaves 99.8% of the mass in the sun alone!
That’s massive.
