Fact of the Day: 12/11/2021
We love chocolate for its sweet and pleasing taste. Have you ever wondered where it came from? At first, chocolate was made in Mexico by the Olmecs. It wasn’t very sweet, though; on the contrary, it was sour! The modern-day chocolate only first arose in Spain. Legend says that Hernán Cortés brought cocoa seeds back to Spain from his trip to the Americas. People in Spain used it as a drink, but added sugar and honey to make it sweet. This was the closest form to our modern-day chocolate. The next time you take a bite of chocolate, try to appreciate the bar in your hand, because there was a time when there was no chocolate—at least, no sweet chocolate!
