Fact of the Day: 24/11/2021

Every year, on November 25, many people celebrate Thanksgiving in the U.S. When was the first Thanksgiving held? According to History.com, “In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies” (“Thanksgiving 2021” par. 1).

Even though many colonies celebrated Thanksgiving, it was not a national holiday. During the Civil War, in 1863, Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a holiday to be celebrated in the November of each year.

If you celebrate Thanksgiving, think about how the holiday impacts your life. How different would your November be if Lincoln had never declared Thanksgiving a national holiday? If you do not celebrate Thanksgiving, but you know someone who does, tell them this tiny fact. They might be surprised to find out the origins of this holiday.
