Have you ever been to the furniture store and seen that certain furniture is made of compressed wood? What is compressed wood?  According to WordReference.com, compressed means “. . . flattened by or as if by pressure” (“Compressed” par. 3). There are four main definitions of compressed, but this definition is the one that relates most to the context. Based on the definition, we can infer that compressed wood means that the wood was flattened by pressure (and this was then used to make the furniture). It always helps to break words down to truly understand their meaning.
