Fact of the Day: 01/02/2022

Today is the start of a very important month: Black History Month. Black History Month happens every February and lasts for the month’s entire duration (in this year’s case, 28 days). The point of this month is “for Americans to learn details of their nation’s . . .  black history” (“Black History Month” par. 1). Who made it possible to help appreciate the rich culture of African Americans? It all started in 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson began Negro History Week (par. 6). This inspired African American students and educators at Kent State University to celebrate Black History Month during the February of 1969 (par. 3). Six years later, Black History Month officially became celebrated across the U.S. (par. 3). Finally, “In 1976, President Gerald Ford praised Black History Month, urging all citizens to ‘seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history’” (par. 3). Here are some ways you can celebrate Black History Month:

  • Consider going to a museum.
  • Take the time to read Black literature (par. 15).

Happy Black History Month!
