Fact of the Day: 04/04/2022
In the United States, someone who lives in New Jersey experiences four seasons—spring, summer, fall, and winter—but in California, one doesn’t experience winter. This isn’t just unique to the U.S.; throughout the globe, there are differences in seasonal experience. How come certain places skip seasons? According to National Geographic, “Seasons occur because Earth is tilted on its axis relative to the orbital plane, the invisible, flat disc where most objects in the solar system orbit the sun. Earth’s axis is an invisible line that runs through its center, from pole to pole. Earth rotates around its axis” (“Season” par. 4). Certain places have specific seasons because of their latitude (distance from the poles or the equator). The four seasons usually happen in places neither too close to the poles nor too close to the equator (par. 7). In areas close to the equator, there’s less difference between the seasons; in areas close to the poles, there’s more extreme difference between the seasons, effectively producing only two (par. 7-8). What are the seasons where you live? Do you have four or fewer seasons?
