Fact of the Day: 15/04/2022
We have all heard of solar panels. They are meant to be able to absorb the sun’s energy and turn it into electricity. How effective are these solar panels? According to Vivint.Solar, “Most figures say that solar panels are roughly between 15% and 18% efficient, meaning that 15% to 18% of the sunlight they absorb is converted into electricity while the rest hits the solar panel and warms the surface like it would anything else” (“How efficient are solar panels” par. 4). This percentage can be affected by the age of the solar panel, whether the panel is PV or thermal, the material of the solar panel, and other factors as well (par. 8-11). Do you think solar panels are efficient? What could be done to improve their efficiency?
