Fact of the Day: 26/04/2022

Have you noticed rocks on sidewalks before? Or maybe rocks on a beach? The rock you may see on a sidewalk is probably not the same type of rock you would see on a volcanic island like Hawaii. How many types of rocks are there? According to the American Museum of Natural History, “There are three kinds of rock: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic” (“Three Types of Rock” par. 1). Each rock has distinct traits and is formed in a different way. Igneous rock forms from cooled magma; sedimentary rock is formed in separate layers as sediment is deposited, typically on the floor of a body of water, like the ocean; metamorphic rock is the result of existing rock being exposed to high temperatures and pressures (par. 2). Have you encountered one one of these types of rocks?
