Fact of the Day: 13/01/2023

Many people know about Einstein, but do you know about Einstein’s first wife? Mileva Einstein-Maric was born in Serbia in 1875, and later became very interested in many of the same subjects as her husband, particularly mathematics and physics. After secondary education, she went to Switzerland to study. At the Zurich Polytechnic School, she metEinstein, and they later married, having a total of 3 kids, but then divorcing in 1916. After the divorce, Maric continued to support her family and started running a boardinghouse where she taught lessons. She died in 1948, and even though she never made a big discovery and her role in Einstein’s own work is unclear, her legacy as a woman who pursued the hard sciences at a time when the fields were male-dominated won’t be forgotten.
