Fact of the Day: 13/11/2020
What do you think of when you hear the word “solid”? Do you picture something hard and heavy, like a table? Perhaps something a little lighter, like ice? Or something a bit more flexible, like rubber? Regardless of what you picture, you might think that the particles that make up a solid are rigid, fixed, and immobile – unlike particles that make up a liquid or gas. However, did you know that the particles in a solid are always moving? They’re just moving so slowly, staying in almost exactly the same place (we say they are vibrating rather than moving for this reason) that we don’t even notice!
