Fact of the Day: 18/02/2022

You may have heard about electric cars. These cars run on lithium-powered batteries instead of gasoline. They are considered better options than gasoline-powered cars because they don’t emit as many greenhouse gasses, but are they truly “green”? According to the NY Times, “[they are] very green. . . . [but] still have environmental effects” (Tabuchi and Plumer par. 1). If an electric car is charged in a charging station powered by coal, then it may compound environmental problems (par. 13). Another environmental effect an electric car may have stems from its lithium-ion power source. Raw materials, including cobalt, must be mined. The mining process can damage the environment and lead to leaks and hazardous exposure in human communities (par. 16-17). Therefore, though electrical cars are safer than normal gasoline-run cars, they still have some negative effects on the environment.
