Fact of the Day: 25/11/2022
Percents are used every day and are probably more common than you think. What is a percent? According to Math.net, “A percentage, or percent, is a number or a ratio that represents a part (or fraction) of 100.” The word percent actually comes from the Latin word “per centum,” which directly translates to “by a hundred” or sometimes to “per one hundred” (par. 1). Percents can be written equivalently as decimals or fractions. You can find percentages when you go shopping (e.g., when you see a sale that is “20% off”) or even when you play a video game (e.g., when a player is at 80% health). While percents can sometimes be annoying to deal with in math class, in real life they are very important!
