Why was the Roman Colosseum constructed? Taking its place amongst the seven wonders of the (new) world. The Roman Colosseum was built nearly 2,000 years ago between 70 A.D and 80 A.D. It’s elliptical structure with efficient concentric seating gave it the ability to seat nearly 50,000 spectators who sat to watch gladiatorial games, battle re-enactments, animal hunts, and many other forms of entertainment for the Roman empire. Although the structure has worn down from earthquakes and various other natural and human caused disasters, it remains upright and still influences the architecture of many amphitheaters today.
