Fact of the Day: 14/11/2022

What is oceanography? You may be able to tell what it is just by the name, but here’s an official definition from National Geographic.org: “Oceanography is the study of the physical, chemical, and biological features of the ocean, including the ocean’s ancient history, its current condition, and its future.” Why does it matter? As time passes and the dangers of climate change increase, branches of study like oceanography are becoming increasingly critical in protecting the world. Oceanography aids scientists with their studies of whale migration patterns (par. 4) and their research of pollution and how chemicals affect the Earth and marine life (par. 3). Specific types of oceanography, such as geological oceanography, which studies the ocean floor, can help us make more accurate predictions of natural disasters such as earthquakes (par. 5). The ocean is a magnificent part of earth, and with the help of branches of science like oceanography, we can help keep it that way.
