Electroplating is the process of coating an object with a thin layer of a metal in order to make it more resistant or for decorative purposes. The procedure can also be used to manufacture items, such as silverware, using cheap metals coated with a thin layer of a more precious metal. That set of silverware might actually be copper, tin, or a more common metal coated with a thin layer of silver!
