Fact of the Day: 19/12/2022

There have been recent breakthroughs in nuclear fusion research that could potentially lead us into the future of clean energy, but to start, what is nuclear fusion? Nuclear fusion is when atoms are fused together. This process produces an immense amount of energy, which is why some are looking to harness it as a clean energy source. Many experiments in the past have sought to produce a net return of energy with nuclear fusion, but none succeeded. The recent landmark experiment that happened early this December changed that (“Panel Discussion: Nuclear Fusion Breakthrough”). According to CNN, “The experiment put in 2.05 megajoules of energy to the target and resulted in 3.15 megajoules of fusion energy output – generating more than 50% more energy than was put in” (par. 3). Usually, only stars are able to produce more energy from fusion than the energy required to get the reaction started, which is why the experiment is so revolutionary. So far though, the energy is not enough to power a whole energy grid. Scientists are currently hoping that with more time, nuclear fusion will be able to heat water and even help provide electricity in homes. What do you think about nuclear fusion power? Would you use it in your home?
