Fact of the Day: 23/11/2020

Did you know you can make an empty bottle burst? If you seal the bottle at sea level and then carry it to the top of a mountain, it will expand to the point of bursting! How does this happen? The air pressure at sea level is much greater than the air pressure at a high altitude, so as the bottle increases in elevation, the air pressure around it decreases. However, the air pressure inside the bottle itself stays the same. At the top of the mountain, the air pressure inside the bottle is greater than the surrounding pressure, causing the volume of the bottle to expand. Eventually, the walls experience a pressure too great and the bottle bursts.
