Fact of the Day: 09/12/2021

Have you seen YouTube videos of kids making slime before? There are many people who make slime these days, but who created the first slime toy? According to Steve Spangler Science, the origin of slime is a bit contested: some credit Mattel (1976), while others credit Nickelodeon TV (1979) as the first slime creator (par. 1).

Regardless of who created it first, slime has come a long way. People make it to “relax, get Instagram famous, and make [the screen shows $200,000]” (“ChannelFrederator” 0:33-0:41). How did this trend start? The trend of making slime started in “2016 when videos out of Thailand flooded Instagram. While the recipe had been floating around for years before, it struck a chord with a new generation of kids” (“ChannelFrederator” 10:30-10:39). Not only is slime used as a source of entertainment, but it is also sold for money. Isn’t it so cool that slime has developed from a toy to a source of income?
