Fact of the Day: 10/11/2022

Most people know about Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, and most people have heard of the Renaissance Era and Renaissance art, but what is the Renaissance really? History.com describes it as “the period immediately following the Middle Ages in Europe [which] saw a great revival of interest in the classical learning and values of ancient Greece and Rome” (par. 1). These values greatly influenced the art of that time. The Renaissance is believed to have started in Italy. Drawing on Greek influences, artists began to realistically represent the human form. Commissioned art was quite common in the early Renaissance times, from 1401-1490 (par. 7), and so was art related to religious themes. Leonardo da Vinci did a large amount of his work during the 15th century. He worked with light and shadow to create vivid works, which many people marveled (and still marvel) at. Near the end of the Renaissance (late 1500s), oil paintings began spreading in popularity, though the idea of the oil painting can be traced back to centuries before. The Renaissance was a time when new skills mixed with old ideas, and when art really flourished. The magnificent artistic pieces from this era can still be admired today.
