Fact of the Day: 15/12/2022

Many people now start learning about computers from a young age. Technology has grown and has become an imperative part of daily life, but it wasn’t always. Do you ever think about the people who studied technology before it became so well known? One of the most important of these people was Ada Lovelace. Lovelace was born in the early 1800s to a wealthy family. Her mother pushed for her to have the best tutors so she could learn subjects like math and science (par. 2). Lovelace met an inventor named Charles Babbage with whom she worked closely later in life. Even after she married and had kids, she continued her work with Babbage (par. 4). According to National Geographic Kids, “In 1843, Babbage was developing the Analytical Engine, a more complicated version of the Difference Engine. He asked Lovelace to translate French text from his engineer into English” (par. 5). Ada examined the notes and formed ideas on how this machine compared to other machines that calculated numbers. She imagined how one machine could form both numbers and letters. These ideas would later become a basic explanation of how a computer program works (par 6). Though sometimes we may take things like technology for granted, we should always remember trailblazers like Ada Lovelace.
