Fact of the Day: 29/04/2021

Have you ever wondered why the ocean is blue, while regular tap water is clear? The reason is that water absorbs long wavelengths of visible light (which include the ‘colors’ of red, orange, and yellow) much more than short wavelengths of light (such as blue). When the sun shines on the ocean and other bodies of water, the water absorbs all colors of the visible light spectrum and leaves blue to filter through. Other colors, such as green, yellow, and orange, may appear in spots on the ocean due to light bending off other surfaces or debris in the ocean. The water, however, will primarily reflect blue. This is the same reason why the sky is blue!
