Fact of the Day: 30/09/2021
Did you know that there’s more than one alphabet system?
English (along with many other languages) uses the Latin alphabet. Although the English variation of the Latin alphabet has 26 letters, there are other variations present in some European languages that omit K and W or that add additional letters, which may vary the total letter count.
The Latin alphabet, however, is just one of several alphabets. The other most commonly used alphabet—the basis for some 50 languages—is Cyrillic. Modern Cyrillic languages tend to have around 30 letters, which is more than English does.
Other alphabets include the Hebrew, Arabic, Indian, Greek, Glagolitic, Etruscan, Runic, and ogham alphabets. Use the first Britannica link below (or another credible website) to read some more on these other alphabets. What similarities do they share with the Latin alphabet? What differences do they have that set them apart?
