How does a photocopier work? Photocopiers utilize the principle of the photoelectric effect in which negatively charged electrons are attracted – and thus drawn to – a positively charged metal plate. Likewise, photocopiers use static electricity to project an image onto a sheet of paper and negatively charged black powder, called toner, is attracted to that positive electricity and creates an image on the paper. Lastly, the image is set by a laser.
