What does stove gas smell like?

Your first answer to that question would probably be something along the lines of ‘rotten eggs’ due to the strong smell we associate with gas. But did you know that natural gas and propane, which are commonly used in stoves, don’t actually have a smell at all? Gas companies usually add an extra chemical, mercaptan, to give gas its distinctive, strong odor. The chemical itself is harmless, and serves to alert users when gas may be leaking. This helps ensure the safety of gas users and the people around them.
