What is the hardest language in the world to learn? If you’re an English speaker looking for a tough challenge, what language should you take on?
According to Babbel, the answer is Mandarin Chinese, ranked as the hardest language to learn. Why? It has thousands of characters that you need to learn in addition to what you usually study when you learn a language, and since it’s a tonal language, the tone you use when you speak it can change the whole meaning of your message. Britannica says four distinct tones are recognized, which means that a given word can have four different meanings depending on how you utter it. How’s that for a challenge?
