Fact of the Day: 06/04/2022

A desert typically has vast lands filled with sand, and maybe a cactus or oasis here and there. What turns a place into a desert? According to Britannica, a piece of land can become a desert by a change in atmospheric conditions. If air currents that pass over that land lose moisture and relative humidity, then it will become rare for clouds to form, and, consequently, for rain to fall and hydrate the land. Wind can increase evaporation of water on the land’s surface, and the land (typically inland, not near bodies of water) can become parched and arid, producing a desert (Rafferty par. 3). In fact, since deserts are just very dry areas, there are even cold deserts where the ‘sand’ is dried water (par. 4)! Do you find deserts interesting?
