What is the most efficient shape in the world? Is it a circle, a square, perhaps a triangle? Turns out, it’s a hexagon. Due to the hexagon’s ability to be tessellated in the most efficient, space conserving manner, it’s used everywhere in nature! You can see hexagons in the structure of water and snowflakes, and in beehives. Bees utilize hexagons to create their hives because they produce an abundance of honey, but only a small amount of wax in which to store that honey. Thus, they create their hives as hexagons to fit the maximum amount of honey with the least amount of building material. Even human beings are taking advantage of this awesome shape by creating hexagonal apartment complexes, such as the Big’s Honeycomb building. What else do you think we can use hexagons for?
