Fact of the Day: 07/10/2020
The Norse god Thor has become increasingly popular in recent years due to his other-worldly powers and unique characteristics portrayed in movies, shows, and comics. One interesting capability of his, however, is his ability to weild the hammer Mjölnir, created from a neutron star and enchanted by his father so that only individuals worthy of it can wield it. Magic aside, although Mjölnir is science fiction, the possibility of it existing is very real. In fact, physics proves it so. Mjölnir was forged from a neutron star, which is a celestial body made of densely packed neutrons that allow it to have an incredibly large mass with a very small radius, created by the explosion of a supernova. Because of its large mass and small size, Newton’s second law of physics, force = mass x acceleration, says that only the strongest, most worthy individual (definitely not a human) would be able to resist the momentum of (or lift) this fictional weapon, thus proving the science behind Thor’s hammer absolutely true!
